The Farbers lived in Tsarist Russia, in the Cherson province, sometimes in Odessa, sometimes in Ananyev.

1. Samuel Farber was born in Russia and married Hannah Schwartz, who was also born in Russia.

2. Jacob Farber was born in 1845 in Russia, and died on April 20, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. He married Mollie Schechter, daughter of Abraham Schechter and Celia/Tzieva Miller. Mollie was born in 1844 in Russia, and died on November 20, 1939 in the Bronx, NY.

Jacob and Mollie, with daughter Feiga and granddaughter Rosie, left Hamburg on the Patricia in 1912. They left behind the Noodel family and went to live with sons Abe and Sam. In 1930 Mollie was living with the families of son Abe and daughter Tzvetcha on S. 9th Street in Brooklyn, NY.

3. Abe Farber was born in 1873 in Odessa, Russia. In 1897 he married Jennie Rabinowitz, daughter of Hanoch Rabinovich and Soshia Heiman. Jennie was born in 1882 in Russia and died on June 2, 1940. Abe died on April 12, 1957.

 

Children of Abe Farber and Jennie Rabinowitz:

 

   i. Hyman Farber, born 1898 in Russia. He married Jennie Levy in

     1926. He naturalized in Florida in 1934.

  ii. Rosie Farber, born 1900 in Russia, died 1995 in New York.

     She married Solomon Merlis, who was born in 1891 and died

     in 1966. They had five sons and one daughter.

iii. Tessie Farber, born 1903 in Russia. She married Ben Bernstein;

     they divorced in 1971 in Los Angeles. They had one son and

     one daughter.

 iv. Louis Farber, born 1907 in New York.

 v. Max Farber, born 1913 in New York.

On June 18, 1904, Aba Farbarschewitz sailed from Glasgow on the Numidian with brother Schabsa. They landed in New York in July and were going to friend Mendel Svigals at 188 E. 104th Street in Manhattan.

 

Abe was a butcher. On May 27, 1905 Jennie arrived from Odessa via Antwerp on the Finland, along with children Hyman/Mennie, Rosie/Ruchel, and Tessie/Taube. In 1910 the family lived on Division Street and by 1920 had moved uptown to E. 118th Street. In 1930 the family lived with Jacob and Mollie and sister Tzvetcha’s family in Brooklyn. By 1940 Abe and Jennie lived on 4th Street in Brooklyn with son Max, who was also a butcher.

4. Samuel Farber was born in 1880 in Russia and died August 8, 1959 in New York. He arrived in New York with brother Abe in 1904. Like his brother Abe, Sam was a butcher. In 1905 he married Bertha/Bessie Schechter, daughter of Josef Schechter and Ette Piller.

     16.    i. Mamie Farber, born 1908 in New York; in 1929 she married Benjamin Moskowitz,

                son of Joseph M. Moskowitz and Rebecca Galo.

     17.   ii. Lillian Farber, born 1910 in New York.

     18.  iii. Josephine Farber, born 1914 in New York.

     19.  iv. Moses/Morris Farber, born 1916 in New York.

 

In 1910 the family lived on Eldridge Street in Manhattan. By 1920 they had moved to Brooklyn. In 1930, Sam and Bessie lived in Hoboken, NJ with daughters Lillian and Josephine. The 1940 census shows Betsy Farber in Hoboken with daughter Lillian and Josephine Rothstein and Josephine's daughter Shirley. Sam’s whereabouts in 1940 are unknown.


 

5. Feiga Farber was born in 1874 in Russia and died in 1963 in NY. She married and divorced (1) Moses Kotler. She married (2) Sam Davidson, who was born in 1868. He was the son of Gershon Davidson and Tulea Grossman.

  i. Leah Kotler, born 1900 in Russia. she married Tadross Callier on Nov. 24, 1918 in the Shemerin

     Labeker Congregation in Montreal. They had one son and two daughters.

 ii. Rosie Kotler, born 1899 in Russia, died in 1987 in New York.

 

Child of Feiga Farber and Sam Davidson:

 

iii. Sylvia Davidson, born 1915 in New York.

 

Feiga was also known as Fannie. She immigrated in 1912 with daughter Rosie and parents Jacob and Mollie.

 

Sam Davidson is listed as a butcher in the 1920 census; they lived at E. 119th Street in New York. In 1930 he is listed as a cobbler from Vilna, and the family lived on Elder Avenue in the Bronx. Rosie was listed there as Davidson. Sam died in February 1940 in New York. The widowed Feiga lived with her two daughters on 172nd Street in the Bronx.

6. Muttel Farber was born on May 21, 1881 in Russia. He was married in Russia to Unknown Ribak. He married (2) Josephine Unknown Kohn in 1921; she was born in 1884 in Hungary. Muttel died in 1943 in the Bronx, NY.

 i. Sonia Farber, born 1908 in Russia, died in 1986 in Los Angeles. She married Morris Greenberg in Reno,

    NV in 1936. They had one daughter, Hadassah Estelle Willow Greenberg, born 1941 in New York, died

    2011 in Albuquerque, NM.

 

Child of Muttel Farber and Josephine Unknown Kohn:

 

ii. Sylvia Farber, born 1921 in New York.

 

Muttel was also known as Max. He came to the U.S. on March 15, 1911 on the Ryndam, as Max Farber. According to family, he failed the eye exam at Ellis Island and was forced to return to Europe. Three years later, he arrived in Montreal in November 1914 and crossed the land border into the U.S.

In 1930 Max, Josephine, and Sylvia lived on Colgate Avenue in the Bronx, and he worked in a butcher shop. On his naturalization papers, Max is known as Metel Ferbasczewicz; he naturalized on July 8, 1937. He lists daughters Sonia and Sylvia on his papers; Josephine listed other children (presumably from an earlier marriage) on her papers.

7. Tzvetcha Farber was born in 1884 in Russia, and died on March 3, 1975 in NY. She was also known as Celia. She married Sam Noodel, who was born in 1880 and died on December 29, 1952.

  i. Louis Noodel, born 1908 in Russia, died in 1986 in New York. He was married and had a son.

 ii. Victoria Noodel, born 1912 in Russia. She married Sam Miller; they had a daughter.

iii. Clara Noodel, born 1914 in Russia, died 1998. She married Sam Kuzinitz; they had a son.

iv. Pearl Noodel, born 1915 in Russia, died in 1969 in New York. She married Harry Brodsky in 1935.

     They had a son.

 

The entire family immigrated in 1923. Sam Noodel was a grocer. In 1930 they were living on S. 9th Street in Brooklyn with Jacob and Mollie and brother Abe’s family. The Noodels were still on S. 9th Street in 1940.

ii. Norma Farber, born 1928 in New York,

    died 1986 in New York. She married

    Julian Golub, who was born in 1920 in

    NY and died in 1988. They had one

    son and one daughter.


 

8. Hyman Farber was born in 1886 in Russia, died on May 9, 1946 in New York. He married Dina Shenker, daughter of Alter Shenker and Haia Reich; she was born in 1888 in Romania and died on June 11, 1963 in NY.

9. Charna Farber was born in 1891 in Russia. In 1913 she married Philip Messinger, son of Louis Messinger and Pessel Baum; he was born in 1890 and died on January 15, 1969 in NY. Charna died on August 10, 1966.

  i. Victoria Messinger, born 1913 in New York, died in 2013 in New York.

     She married Bernard Packer, who was born in 1909 and died in

     1967. They had one son and one daughter.

 ii. Ida Messinger, born 1917 in New York, died 1999 in New York.

iii. Herman Messinger, born 1919 in New York, died 1985 in New York.

     He married Toby Bilkis, who was born in 1921 and died in 2001.

     They had two sons and one daughter.

iv. Louis Messinger, born 1926 in New York. He married Helen Gross.

     They had four daughters.

 v. Yetta Messinger, born 1937 in New York. She married Irwin Spector.

     They had two sons.

 

Charna was also known as Jennie. She came from Rotterdam on March 30, 1912 on the Ryndam to brother Abe at 211 Division St. in NY. She traveled with sister Clara and they were listed in the ship manifest as Czarni and Chaike Farbaszewicz.

 

Philip Messinger was born in 1890 in Galicia, Austria and immigrated in 1908. He worked as a butcher.

 

In 1920 the Messingers lived on E. 118th Street in New York with Jacob and Mollie. The 1925 NYC Police Census shows Mollie living at 111 118th St. with daughter Charna’s family. In the 1930s and 1940s the Messingers lived at 1256 Wheeler Avenue in the Bronx.

10. Clara Farber was born on July 10, 1893 in Russia, and died August 2, 1952 in the Bronx, NY. (See her sister Charna, above, for their arrival on the Ryndam.) She married Samuel Tulepan on March 11, 1917 in the Bronx. He was born on April 24, 1890 in Chatsloty, Poland, and died on August 1, 1958 in the Bronx. (See the Tulepan page.)

 

Children of Clara Farber and Samuel Tulepan:

 

  i. Phil Tulepan, born 1920 in New York, died 1989 in California. He

     married (1) Rita Falorin, (2) Dottie Tilzer Berzak. With Rita Falorin he

     had one son and one daughter.

 ii. Faye Tulepan, born 1923 in New York, died 2003 in New York. She

     married Sol Gelber, who was born in 1915 and died in 1957.

iii. Ethel Tulepan, born 1925 in New York, died 1980 in Florida. She

     married Leon Pattick, who was born in 1923 and died in 2000.

     They had one son and one daughter.

 

In 1930 the Tulepans were living at 1254 Wheeler Avenue in the Bronx with the Kadetsky family, who were related to the Tulepans.
