Descendants of William W. Williamson

 

Generation No. 1

 

1.  WILLIAM W. WILLIAMSON died 09 Jan 1733/34 in Elizabeth, NJ.  He married MARGARET DEHART, daughter of MATTHIAS DEHART and JANNETIE MAURITZ.  She was born 1701, and died 1759 in Elizabeth, NJ.

 

William was one of the founders of Elizabethtown, New Jersey. He came to Elizabeth in 1725, and was a tailor and mill owner.

2.  MATTHIAS WILLIAMSON (WILLIAM W.) was born 1716 and died 08 Nov 1807 in Elizabeth, NJ.  In 1750 he married SUSANNA HALSTEAD, daughter of JOHN HALSTEAD and SUSANNAH BLANCHARD; she was born 1730, and died 1793 in Elizabeth, NJ.

 

Matthias Williamson served in the military in various capacities throughout his life. In 1740 he was a Lieutenant of a company of cadets in Elizabethtown, NJ. In 1759 he was appointed alternate Paymaster of an expedition against Canada. Just prior to the American Revolution, he served on the Committee of Correspondence for Elizabethtown, and served as Colonel of a light horse regiment. From 1776 to 1777, he was an aide-de-camp to Major Dayton and was a  Brigadier general of the NJ Militia. Williamson was taken prisoner at Connecticut Farms when serving as quartermaster in June 1780.

 

Matthias Williamson also served his community, in 1749 as a vestryman of St. John's Episcopal Church in Elizabethtown, and in 1757 as High Sheriff of Essex County.

 

Wife Susannah, son William and daughter Margaretta Jane predeceased him, but Matthias provided well for his other children and his grandchildren. His will, proved in November 1807, included a bequest of “interest of 700 pounds, for his support, during his life,” for son Jacob. It also emancipated his “servant woman, Hager,” with her bed and bedding and $15.

3.  WILLIAM WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1748, and died 29 Jul 1785 in Elizabeth, NJ.  On February 14, 1773, he married LYDIA HAMPTON, daughter of JONATHAN HAMPTON.  She was born 27 Mar 1748, and died in 1814 in Elizabeth, NJ.

                  She died in 1867. A slave named Sally and her children were left to William Ricketts Williamson

                  in his mother Lydia's will.

     9.  iv. MATTHIAS HAMPTON WILLIAMSON, b. 1774, Elizabeth, NJ; d. 19 Feb 1837, Elizabeth, NJ.

 

4.  MATTHIAS WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1752, and died 1836 in Elizabeth, NJ.  He married ESTHER (HENRIETTA) LEVY, daughter of ISAAC LEVY and ELIZABETH PUE.  She was born 1759, and died 1831 in Elizabeth, NJ.

 

In 1770 Matthias graduated from Princeton College, where his dissertation was on freedom of religion. He was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in November 1774, but his law career was interrupted by the Revolution, during which he served in the commissary department.

        iv.   JONATHAN D. WILLIAMSON, born 1792 in Elizabeth, NJ.

         v.   CHARLES LAWRENCE WILLIAMSON, born 1796 in Elizabeth, NJ, died November 1846

                in Elizabeth, NJ.

        vi.   MARGARET MATILDA DeCARADO WILLIAMSON, born 1797 in Elizabeth, NJ.

               She married Joseph Kissam.

       vii.   ELIZA, born 1799 in Elizabeth, NJ.

 

5.  SUSANNAH WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1757.  In 1779 she married JONATHAN DAYTON, a physician, whose father was Elias Dayton.

          i. SUSAN WILLIAMSON DAYTON, b. 1782, married REV. FREDERICK BEASLEY in 1803,

             died in childbirth in 1804.

         ii. MOLLY DAYTON, married THOMAS HEYWARD GIBBONS.

        iii. HANNAH DAYTON, who married DR. OLIVER HATFIELD SPENCER in 1813;

             m. second DR. GEORGE ROSS CHETWOOD.

        iv. ELIAS DAYTON.

 

6.  ISAAC HALSTEAD WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1767 in Elizabeth, NJ, and died 1844 in Elizabeth, NJ.  He married ANN CROSSDALE JOUET 06 Aug 1808 in Elizabeth, NJ. She was born 1775, and died 1853.

 

Isaac Halstead Williamson studied law with his brother Matthias, and was admitted to the bar in 1791. He served in several governmental capacities: in the Assembly in 1816, as Governor and Chancellor of New Jersey from 1817 to 1829, and as a member of the State Council. He was elected as a presiding officer to the Constitutional Convention. He is buried in the ancestral vault at St. John's. He sued in court in regard to the estate of his brother William.

8.  JOHN WILLIAMSON (WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1783, and died 1825.  He married MARY UNKNOWN.

              i.   JAMES CARRA WILLIAMSON, christened in March 1819.

 

9.  MATTHIAS HAMPTON WILLIAMSON (WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1774 in Elizabeth, NJ, and died 19 Feb 1837 in Elizabeth, NJ.  He married FRANCES HARGRAVE JOUET. She was born 1774 in Elizabeth, NJ, and died 13 Oct 1856.

 

Matthias and his wife Frances were cousins. He was a physician, educated at the University of Pennsylvania, where, among others he studied with Benjamin Rush. In February 1792 Matthias was granted a surgery license and in 1793 his "Inaugural Dissertation on the Scarlet Fever, Attended with an Ulcerated Sore Throat" was published. He and his partner, Dr. George Ross, kept a drugstore opposite the Church in Elizabeth, NJ.

 

There is a family story that he died from an overdose of morphine given him by the housekeeper. His will, dated 12/27/1836, and probated 7/22/1837, in Richmond County, Staten Island, NY, mentions sons John, Matthias, James C., and William, and daughter Abigail.

10.  BENJAMIN WILLIAMSON (ISAAC HALSTEAD, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born in 1808 in Elizabeth, NJ. He married ELIZABETH S. UNKNOWN.

12. JOHN TROUP WILLIAMSON (JAMES CARRA, WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.), b. 1806; d. Baltimore, MD in 1849; m. in 1842 LOUISA ELLA ANCRUM, daughter of James Hasell Ancrum and Jane Washington; she was born in 1812 and married 2d Louis T. Cruger, with whom she had other children.

13.  MATTHIAS H. WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS HAMPTON, WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 1808 in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  He married HANNAH BANTA 13 Mar 1828, daughter of PETRUS BANTA and DOROTHEA VAN ORDEN. 

 

Matthias worked as an accountant. He and wife Hannah appear in the 1870 census, living in New Jersey with their son George and his family.

14.  ABIGAIL JOUET WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS HAMPTON, WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born 02 Mar 1812. She married EPHRAIM MCGAVOCK of Wytheville, VA on 18 Nov 1840.

17. JULIA EMMA WILLIAMSON (JOHN TROUP,  JAMES CARRA, WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.), b. 1848 in South Carolina, in 1874 married SAMUEL NEVILLE JENKINSON, who was born in 1846.

In 1870 Frances and Julia were living in Baltimore, MD with mother Louisa Cruger, stepfather L.T. Cruger, and half-brother Hamilton Cruger; also in the household were brother John Condy and sister Frances and brother-in-law James Tate.

               

18.  DUTILLA A.F. WILLIAMSON (MATTHIAS H., MATTHIAS HAMPTON, WILLIAM, MATTHIAS, WILLIAM W.) was born Jan 1829 in Staten Island, NY, and died 25 Feb 1909 in New York, NY.  She married HOWARD FITZRANDOLPH HARRISON; he was born 18 Jul 1820 in Staten Island, NY, and died 20 Aug 1882 in Staten Island, NY.
